Things to Do With Kids in Albany and the Capital Region

The Capital Region is Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Saratoga and the counties around them, and its advantage for families is that the good stuff is spread across eight counties within about forty-five minutes of each other. There’s no single blockbuster attraction. There are twenty decent ones, most of them cheap, and several of them free.

Free and genuinely good

The New York State Museum. On the Empire State Plaza in Albany. Free admission. Full-size dioramas, a working carousel on the top floor, a substantial 9/11 exhibit, and enough Native American and natural history material to fill a morning. The carousel alone justifies the trip for young children.

Empire State Plaza. The concrete government complex is more interesting to children than adults expect — the reflecting pools, the Egg’s shape, the underground concourse full of enormous modern art. In winter they flood part of it for skating.

Thacher State Park. On the Helderberg escarpment twenty minutes southwest of Albany. The Indian Ladder Trail runs along a cliff face behind waterfalls — one of the genuinely memorable short hikes in the state. Steep metal stairs, seasonal closures.

Playgrounds. The region has an unusual number of good ones, and the differentiator for parents is which have bathrooms.

Worth paying for

miSci in Schenectady — science museum plus a planetarium, strongest for ages five to eleven.

Billy Beez at Crossgates — a large indoor play structure, the reliable answer to a February Saturday.

Via Aquarium, also at Crossgates. Small for the price, but the stingray touch tank is a genuine hit.

Huck Finn’s Playland in Albany — the rides salvaged from the old Hoffman’s Playland. Small, cheap, aimed at the under-eight crowd, and better value than anything comparable within an hour.

The Albany Institute of History and Art — the mummies are the draw and children are reliably transfixed by them.

Seasonal

Winter here is long and the indoor list matters more than the outdoor one from December through March.
