Things to Do in Lake George With Kids: What's Worth It and What Isn't

Lake George is an hour north of Albany and it is unapologetically a tourist town. The Village strip is mini golf, arcades, fudge shops, and t-shirt stores, and depending on your temperament that’s either the charm or the problem. The lake itself is thirty-two miles of remarkably clear water with mountains on both sides, and the gap between the strip and the lake is the thing to understand before you plan a trip.

Most families have a much better time when they treat the Village as one afternoon rather than the whole visit.

What’s actually worth your time

Million Dollar Beach. The main public beach at the south end. Lifeguards, bathhouse, real sand, shallow entry. Parking costs money and the lot fills early on hot weekends. The water in Lake George is genuinely clear in a way that surprises people who’ve only swum in the Hudson.

Steamboat cruises. Two main options: the Minne Ha Ha, a real paddlewheeler doing one-hour narrated trips, and the larger Lac du Saint Sacrement doing longer runs. For kids, the Minne Ha Ha is the better call — the paddlewheel is visible and loud and an hour is the right length.

Fort William Henry. A reconstructed 1755 fort with costumed interpreters, musket demonstrations, and cannon firings. The demonstrations are what make it — check the daily schedule when you arrive and plan around a firing. Kids who’ve read or watched anything about the French and Indian War will connect; kids who haven’t will still like the explosions.

Prospect Mountain. A paid scenic highway drives you to a summit with a view down the entire lake. Five and a half miles up, minimal walking at the top. This is the single best effort-to-payoff ratio in the area for families with small children.

Natural Stone Bridge and Caves. About twenty-five minutes north in Pottersville. Self-guided walk through caves and a natural stone arch over a stream. Less polished than Howe Caverns, more actual scrambling, and better for kids who’d rather climb than be led.

The Great Escape. Six Flags’ amusement park plus a separate indoor waterpark at the attached lodge. It’s the biggest single-day expense in the region and it’s worth its own page.

The Village, honestly

The strip is loud, crowded in July and August, and expensive per unit of entertainment. It’s also genuinely fun for one evening — arcades, mini golf, ice cream, the noise. Do it once, at night, after a day on the water. Trying to make it the centerpiece is how families end up spending three hundred dollars and feeling like they didn’t go anywhere.

By age

Toddlers and preschool. Million Dollar Beach, the Minne Ha Ha, Prospect Mountain. Skip Fort William Henry — the cannon firings are much too loud.

Five to eight. Add Fort William Henry, mini golf, and Water Slide World or the Great Escape’s kid areas.

Nine and up. The full Great Escape, Natural Stone Bridge caves, kayak or paddleboard rentals, and the longer boat cruises.

Getting there from Albany

About an hour straight up the Northway to Exit 21. Simple drive, no mountain roads. Summer weekend traffic on Canada Street through the Village is genuinely bad between roughly 11am and 6pm — if you’re headed to the beach, get there before ten or after four.
