There are two separate camping systems in New York and knowing the difference saves you a lot of confusion.
State Parks are run by OPRHP. More facilities — showers, flush toilets, playgrounds, often a guarded beach. Book through ReserveAmerica.
DEC campgrounds are inside the Adirondack and Catskill Forest Preserves. Wilder, quieter, more likely to be on a lake, fewer facilities. Also ReserveAmerica.
With young children, start with a State Park. With older children who’d rather be on a lake than near a bathhouse, go DEC.
Within an hour of Albany
| Campground | Type | County | Playground | Beach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thompson’s Lake / Thacher | State Park | Albany | Yes | — |
| Cherry Plain | State Park | Rensselaer | Yes | Yes |
| Max V. Shaul | State Park | Schoharie | Yes | No |
| Moreau Lake | State Park | Saratoga | Yes | Yes |
| Schodack Island | State Park | Alb/Rens | Yes | No |
| Caroga Lake | DEC | Fulton | — | — |
| Northampton Beach | DEC | Fulton | — | Likely |
| Lake George Battleground | DEC | Warren | — | Walk to Million Dollar Beach |
Moreau Lake and Cherry Plain are the two to know. Both have a playground and a swimming beach, both are inside an hour, and both are State Parks — meaning showers and flush toilets.
Best for a first camping trip
Moreau Lake State Park, Saratoga County. Playground, beach, nature centre, and forty minutes from Albany — close enough to bail out at 9pm if it goes badly.
Cherry Plain, Rensselaer County. Smaller and quieter, same combination.
Caroga Lake or Northampton Beach if you want to be technically inside the Adirondack Park without the drive.
Lake George — seven campgrounds
The densest cluster within an hour.
| Campground | Note |
|---|---|
| Lake George Battleground | Walk to the village and Million Dollar Beach |
| Hearthstone Point | On the lake, north of the village |
| Rogers Rock | North end, quieter |
| Lake George Islands | Island camping — boat access only |
| Luzerne | Fourth Lake, small |
| Eagle Point | Schroon Lake |
| Scaroon Manor | Schroon Lake, day-use beach |
Lake George Islands is the one worth planning around. You camp on an island in the lake, reachable only by boat. For kids over about eight it’s the most memorable camping in the region.

Catskills — under 90 minutes
| Campground | County | Note |
|---|---|---|
| North/South Lake | Greene | Best family campground in the Catskills — beach, escarpment trails, Kaaterskill nearby |
| Devil’s Tombstone | Greene | Small, in the Clove |
| Kenneth L. Wilson | Ulster | Beach, near Woodstock |
| Woodland Valley | Ulster | Trailhead access |
Things to Do in the Catskills With Kids
Further into the Adirondacks
Two to three hours, and worth it for a week rather than a weekend.
Wilmington Notch — closest to Whiteface and High Falls Gorge. Meadowbrook — closest to Lake Placid village. Fish Creek Pond — the most popular campground in the park. Books out within minutes of the window opening. Saranac Lake Islands — island camping on the canoe chain.
What’s free
Primitive camping is free on most DEC land outside campgrounds, with rules: at least 150 feet from any road, trail or water, no more than three nights, groups under ten without a permit.
That’s genuinely free and genuinely wild — no facilities, no water, pack everything out. Not a first trip with children, but worth knowing exists.
RV camping
State Parks generally have electric and water hookups; DEC campgrounds generally don’t.
Private options — KOA and similar — sit closer to the highway and have more amenities and less character.
Booking
Everything state-run books through ReserveAmerica.
Popular sites go fast. Fish Creek Pond and the island campgrounds fill in minutes for peak summer. Moreau Lake fills weekends.
What to know before you go
- Blackflies in late May and June are a real factor from the Adirondacks south into the Catskills. Plan around them or bring serious repellent.
- Firewood must be local. New York restricts moving it more than fifty miles.
- Bear canisters are required in parts of the High Peaks.
- Cell service is poor across most of the Adirondack Park.
- Flush toilets vs vault is the single biggest comfort variable with young kids, and it isn’t obvious from the booking page.

Every DEC campground, sorted by how far you’ll drive
All fifty state campgrounds inside the Adirondack and Catskill forest preserves. Each one is matched against the nearest state park with a playground, because the thing you want to know on a wet afternoon is whether there is somewhere to take the kids within half an hour. Thirty-seven of the fifty have nothing within twenty-five miles — the filter will show you which.
