Things to Do in Lake George in Winter 2026

Lake George in winter is a genuinely different place, and the first thing to understand is how much of it closes.

The Village strip — the arcades, the mini golf, most of the restaurants — largely shuts down from November through April. The steamboats stop. Prospect Mountain’s highway closes. Fort William Henry closes. If you drive up in January expecting the summer town, you’ll find an empty street and a frozen lake.

What’s there instead is better than most people expect, and almost nobody is there for it.

Lake George Winter Carnival

Weekends through February, held on the ice in Lake George Village. Events change by weekend — polar plunge, ATV races on the ice, chili cook-offs, fireworks, a dog parade. It’s free to attend and it’s the single best reason to come up in winter.

With kids: the ice itself is the draw. Standing on a lake you swam in during July lands differently for a seven-year-old than any exhibit will.

Skiing and tubing nearby

Gore Mountain, about 40 minutes north in North Creek — the biggest ski area in the immediate region, with a real beginner program.

West Mountain, in Queensbury, 15 minutes from the village — smaller, cheaper, and a better first-ski-day for young children.

The Great Escape Lodge

The indoor waterpark runs year-round, and in February it’s the reliable answer to a cold weekend. The outdoor amusement park is closed.

Practical

  • The lake doesn’t always freeze solid. Don’t walk out on it outside of the Carnival’s marked areas.
  • It’s colder than Albany by a meaningful margin, and windier on the lake.
  • Book ahead for Carnival weekends — the few open hotels fill.
