Hyatt Cambridge MA

Hotel review: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Cambridge MA

For our recent trip to MIT for the Spark program, we stayed at the Hyatt Regency, Cambridge, MA. With its distinctive flattened step pyramid shape, this hotel is a standout on the shores of the Charles River. Located just across a bridge from Boston University, the Hyatt Cambridge boasts stunning views of Boston’s skyline. Many rooms have balconies, and you can specify if you prefer a view.

The best thing about the Hyatt overall was the staff. We arrived very early in the morning, after a long drive that started at 4am and took us through mountain passes with high winds and snow showers. I was running on fumes when we got there and everyone, from the doorman to the front desk to housekeeping, went above and beyond to get us checked in early and set up comfortably with no fuss. I really felt that we were in good hands, and it made our stay easy and convenient. I may have scared them with my storm-tossed hairdo and bug-eyed panic in the rush to get my son registered on time for his classes, but all the staff were warm and professional. Thank goodness someone was!

The atrium lobby is visually stunning, with a large glass wall facing the river, and the bank of glass elevators going to the hotel’s top floors always in motion. On a sunny morning, you can sit in the lounge area or in the restaurant and enjoy views of the river and the rowing team practices that always seem to be happening.

Parking is on site, in an attached garage, and offers unlimited in and out privileges for hotel guests. The garage is attached by a catwalk tunnel. Also via catwalk is access to the rooftop fitness center and indoor pool. It is a bit of a schlep from the rooms to the pool as you must go down to the second floor, go across the catwalk and then take another elevator to the fitness center floor. Once you get there, you’ll be rewarded with wonderful views of Boston and Cambridge. The pool is a large lap pool, nicely heated and the whole area is very bright and airy. There’s an abundance of fluffy towels, and the fitness center is well equipped and super clean. Just be sure to bring a robe so you aren’t skipping about the atrium balconies in your wet suit on your way back to your room. Unless you’re into that kind of thing. No judgement!

The rooms have been redecorated recently in a soothing zen spa theme. We were very pleased with our king bed standard room. Since I was traveling alone with my two children, I opted to share the king with my daughter and get a rollaway bed for my son, and it was delivered without a fuss. Both beds were very comfortable, and the room was spotless, and quiet. I especially liked the way the designers had sectioned off a dressing area between the bathroom and the main part of the room. It made the room much more comfortable, especially when traveling with kids. And especially when traveling with a Minecraft addict who happened to commandeer the laptop at about 2am for a quick session while her brother snored away on the rollaway bed and she hid around the partition in peace and quiet.

We also enjoyed breakfast at the hotel’s Zephyr on the Charles restaurant the next day. The host seated us right by the windows for optimal river and people watching. The breakfast buffet was very good, with an omelette station along with other hot entree items, and a nice variety of very fresh fruit and berries, pastries, and other treats. I went bonkers on the omelette and berries, and the kids attacked the croissants. And the bacon. Luckily for everyone else dining that day, there were ample reinforcements, thanks to the excellent service staff.

The main downsides of the Hyatt Cambridge for us were the wifi charges ($12.95 per 24 hours really adds up), and the lack of any stores or restaurants other than the ones in the hotel. There is a courtesy shuttle that can take you around the area to various train stations and other locations, which is good, because the Hyatt is not in an area that’s very interesting to walk in on its own (unless you are sticking to the river path). Parking is also extra at $35 per day, with unlimited in and out privileges.
