The self-guided pace is the whole advantage. No tour times, no guide setting the speed, no group of strangers — you go when you want and stop as long as a six-year-old wants to stare at a hole in the ground. With young kids that beats a guided cavern more often than not.
Natural Stone Bridge & Caves sits in Pottersville, about twenty-five minutes north of Lake George village and an hour and twenty from Albany. It’s the outdoor cave — you’re above ground most of the time, walking over and around a natural stone arch with a stream running underneath it, looking down into caves rather than walking through them.
That makes it a genuinely different proposition from Howe Caverns or Secret Caverns, and for some families a better one.

What you actually do
A marked trail loops over the stone arch, down beside the stream, past cave mouths and potholes worn into the rock. Some of it is boardwalk, some is stone steps, and it’s uneven in places — this is a walk in the woods, not a paved cavern floor.
The stone bridge itself is the largest marble cave entrance in the east.
No strollers. Carriers work for the loop.
The adventure tour
There’s a separate, more serious caving option — actual crawling, helmets, headlamps, getting properly muddy. Age and size minimums apply.
This is the version for confident ten-and-ups, and it’s the reason to come back a second time.
Is it worth it at 3, 5, 8, 12?
Under 4 — workable, unlike the other caves, because you’re outdoors and can turn around whenever. You’ll carry them on the uneven sections.
5 to 7 — good. The self-guided pace suits this age better than a timed tour, and there’s enough scrambling to hold attention.
8 to 11 — good, and this is where the adventure tour starts to be the draw rather than the main loop.
12 and up — do the adventure tour or it’s a short visit.
