Howe Caverns vs Secret Caverns: Which One With Kids?

They are two miles apart in Howes Cave and families routinely visit one without knowing the other exists. They are not interchangeable.

The short answer

First visit, young kids, or anyone who’d rather not climb 103 stairs: Howe Caverns. Older kids, second visit, or anyone who likes their attractions rough around the edges: Secret Caverns. Both in one day: yes, if the legs hold.

Which for which age

Under 5 — Howe Caverns, and only just. The elevator makes it possible; Secret Caverns’ stairs don’t.

5 to 7 — Howe Caverns for most. The boat ride is the thing that lands at this age, and the walk is easier.

8 to 11 — either, and this is the age where Secret Caverns starts to win. The waterfall is more memorable than the boat, and the stairs are an adventure rather than an obstacle.

12 and up — Secret Caverns, if you’re only doing one. It’s stranger, and strange beats polished at that age.

Doing both in a day

Genuinely possible — they’re two miles apart and neither tour is long. Budget for a family of four and expect a solid half-day.

Order matters. Do Secret Caverns first while everyone has legs, then Howe Caverns, where the elevator does the work.

Don’t do both with anyone under six. One cave is plenty.

What nobody tells you

Both are around 50°F year-round, so this is a genuinely good hot-August-afternoon plan and a slightly odd January one. Neither is stroller-accessible. Neither has much beyond the cave itself, so plan lunch elsewhere.
