Things to Do in Saratoga Springs in Winter 2026

Saratoga in winter is the easy answer to a January Saturday. Forty minutes from Albany, the downtown stays fully open — unlike Lake George — and the state park is arguably better in snow than in summer.

The pools close, but the park becomes a cross-country ski and snowshoe area with groomed trails through two thousand acres. Rentals are available nearby.

The mineral springs still run in winter. Several of the spouts don’t freeze, and drinking sharply carbonated water from the ground in the snow is a better story than it sounds.

Congress Park

Skating when conditions allow, and the park in snow is genuinely pretty. The carousel closes for the season.

Downtown

Broadway stays open, which is the real advantage over the other winter destinations in this region. Bookshops, restaurants, and enough on one street to fill an afternoon when it’s too cold to be outside.

Indoor options

The Children’s Museum at Saratoga — hands-on, aimed at the under-eight crowd, and the reliable answer when the weather turns.

The National Museum of Racing — better for older kids, and quiet in winter.

Practical

  • Downtown parking is free and easy in winter, unlike August.
  • The track is closed. The meet is July–September.
  • Forty minutes from Albany on the Northway, and it’s a flat, easy drive in weather.

Where to stay

Saratoga is dramatically cheaper in winter than during the summer meet.
