Drive through anywhere in Vermont and you will notice two things: there are lots of mountains and there are lots of cows. With such beautiful surroundings, it’s no wonder those cows make some of the World’s Best Cheese.

Back in 1919 a group of ninety-four farmers got together to start making butter out of their excess milk. In 1930 they started making cheese, and thank goodness for that. Cabot Cheese is one of the best loved cheeses in the Northeast, and if you drive up to the small village of Cabot, Vermont – just 20 or so miles north of the capital of Montpelier – you can see how it’s made in the Cabot Creamery factory tour.

The Cabot Creamery tour is a fun tour for kids and adults alike. Instead of tickets, the cashier hands out little Cabot buttons or cow-spotted silicone wristbands. Free souvenirs! While you wait for the tour to begin, browse the store and sample all the great flavors of Cabot Cheese, some of which are not available locally.

Among the unique cheddars available here are a few Specialty Aged Cheddars as well as Flavored Cheddars: Chipotle; Garlic & Herb; Horseradish; Tomato Basil; Hot Habanero; Smoky Bacon; Hand-Rubbed Tuscan; and Hot Buffalo Wing. The Smoky Bacon and Hand-Rubbed Tuscan were especially delicious. Also for sampling are some of Cabot’s great dips; all other Cabot products can be purchased.

Lactose intolerant? Not a problem! Aged cheeses, like Cabot Cheddar, are naturally lactose free. Other Cabot Cheeses are lactose free as well, like Monterey Jack and Muenster. What’s more they are also naturally gluten free as well as kosher and Halal certified. Being kosher and Halal certified also means that these delicious cheeses are free of all animal by-products, and are made without any animal rennet. Great for vegetarians!

But cheese tasting is only part of the Cabot Creamery experience. Take the guided tour and learn not just how cheese is made, but also a lot about Vermont agriculture and Cabot’s Cooperative heritage. Cabot is not just a company, but 1,200 farmers in Vermont and New York owning and operating their creamery with the community around them. Check out what Cabot does for schools and communities.

Cabot Creamery Factory Tour, Cabot Vermont

The Cabot Creamery Visitor’s Center is located 2878 Main Street, Cabot, VT. Tours cost only $2, and under 12 are free, and usually run Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm, plus Sundays during Summer and Early Fall.

If you are more interested in the cheese and not the factory, Try the Cabot Annex Store in Waterbury or the Cabot Quechee Store, both in Vermont, or the Cabot Farmers’ Annex in Portland, Maine.
