Planning a USA Road Trip In Search of Foodie Adventures

3727574170_c95493f1c7_mWe’re heading out on another US road trip. In 2009, we were a mom, two kids, and a jam-packed Chevy Suburban looping the country looking for storybook settings in a Read Across America Road Trip.

This time, a couple of friends are joining us in the same jam-packed Chevy Suburban, and we’re going in search of things to eat that are special to an area. I’m dubbing this, “Foodie Adventures Across America.”

Inspired by Jane and Michael Stern’s 500 Things to Eat Before It’s Too Late: and the Very Best Places to Eat Them, we’re searching for the “Holy Grail of deliciousness,” hoping to find “a dish to remember, with joy, forever.”

We’re going to sample as many regional foods as we can along a route that has been determined by my teen’s need to get to Mt. Hood, OR for a ski camp, the tween’s desire to attend the Roblox Rally in San Francisco on August 1st, and my plans to attend Blogher ‘11 in San Diego.

The road trip plan, for now, looks like this:

7/17 Leave Albany, NY

Buffalo, NY

Cleaveland, OH

  • Try the Polish Boy – Hot Sauce Williams – 815 Carnegie Avenue, Cleveland – (216) 391-2230

7/18 Leave Cleveland, OH

  • Breakfast with Cinnamon Rolls in Davenport, IA

7/19 Leave Davenport, IA

  • Choose between Iowa Pork Chops, Pella Bologna, or Tenderloin in Des Moines, IA
  • Look for Bing Candy and the Coney Island in Sioux City, IA
  • Overnight somewhere 3 hours west of Sioux City, IA – Any suggestions?

7/20 Leave (Don’t Know Yet)

  • Rapid City, SD
  • Down a Ditch (Whiskey & Water) in Sheridan, WY

7/21 Leave Sheridan, WY

  • Billings, MT
  • Bozeman, MT
  • Pocatello, IA

7/22 Leave Pocatello, IA

  • Twin Falls, IA
  • Share a Basque Dinner in Boise, IA

7/23 Arrive at Mt. Hood, OR

As you can see, we still have a lot of blanks on this itinerary, and I haven’t begun to tackle where we will stay, or where we will go in Oregon, California, or the return loop. Can you think of any regional foods that we should try?

Here is what it looks like, for now, on a Google Map: View Larger Map
