Exuma – A Family Adventure of a Lifetime!
Looking for an island adventure, where you can get away from the masses?
Consider a powerboat excursion to the Exuma Islands in the Bahamas for a day of snorkeling coral reefs, beach-side feasting, and encounters with tropical wildlife.
Exuma is a district of the Bahamas, consisting of over 360 islands (or cays) located 38 nautical miles from Nassau, and easily reached by powerboat in just one hour. We were were able to book our excursion with Island World Adventures at Bahamas Atlantis, but it is advisable to book this popular outing well in advance.
Our first stop was at Saddleback Cay where we snorkeled in calm and translucent waters, before summiting the hill for a spectacular view that stretched from horizon to horizon, and gave us a chance to spy on the rest of our party.
But the most interesting part of this short hike was discovering the remnants of what looked to be space shuttle detritus.
It was a mystery, but we had more important things on our mind – lunch!
We were treated to a tropical buffet at the Sand Bar; this was a very casual dining spot with a unique trash removal system.
Without refrigeration, leftovers don’t do well in the tropical heat. But nature provides. Helpful sharks and seagulls take care of larger food items, and hermit crabs put away the rest.
My son saved a few grapes for the next leg of our trip where we would meet the “Bahamian Dragon,” the Rock Iguana (Cyclura cychlura inornata.)
And his friends.
And then we were off to perhaps the most visually stunning part of this adventure – exploring isolated sandbars offering only temporary refuge for passing tourists.
