Men in the Kitchen: Red Pack Giveaway

red_pack_tomatoesIn my house, the man brings home the bacon AND fries it up in a pan. He has no choice, because I’m even less qualified to provide palatable meals. But his days of being the sole chef in the house are numbered.

My son is promising to be a fair chef himself. This week, he mastered the fluffy pancake drizzled in fresh-bottled maple syrup. And today, he nailed the Hearty Italian Salad.

A few weeks ago, we received a gift basket of Red Pack Tomatoes cleverly placed in a giant can. Inside, we found full-size cans of the tomatoes, an assortment of kitchen utensils, and a couple of very easy recipes. But it sat in the box, waiting for a day when someone in the house would have time to cook.


Today, finally, Alex decided to tackle one of the recipes with his dad. He chose one that was very easy, five ingredients and fifteen minutes from start to finish.


I was skeptical about the Hearty Italian Salad recipe. I love salads, but I never imagined that canned tomatoes would be an appetizing addition. And when I learned that the recipe called for pastrami, I was sure that I wouldn’t like it. Seems to me that the only time to get pastrami is at Carnegie Deli, right? But, what do I know.


The salad turned out to be surprisingly delicious. Somehow, the combination of lettuce, Italian dressing, and canned tomatoes actually tasted fresh. I not only finished a bowl of the salad, but I went back for seconds.

That’s COOL! My son would love it 🙂 He would find some tomato-olive dish to make, but for me, I would prefer something very easy…say that nice Bite Size Pizza recipe that can be done in the microwave 😀

I like easy, so I am going with the Bow Ties Pasta with Tomatoes and Bacon. everything is better with bacon, right?

I wouldn’t mind trying the Tuscan Tomato Bruschetta. For some reason, I’ve never made bruschetta before.
