Stalking Bettie and her Marvelous Cupcakes

bettie_saratoga3After our visit to Bettie’s Double Decker Cupcake Stand, I was compelled to go to the mother ship in Saratoga Springs, NY.  I just had to see the source of those cupcakes, with their strange but oddly delicious flavor combinations.

Locating the cupcakery cafe in downtown Saratoga Springs is a little tricky.  On the first try, I followed my iPhone Foursquare map to a lovely little clothing boutique that was most definitely not Bettie’s Cafe.

On the second try, I asked for directions, and was told to look for the indoor mall at the Downstreet Marketplace.  I might still have walked right by, if not for the cupcake lady greeting passing pedestrians.

Even among all the weird and wonderful folks strolling down Broadway, she is hard to miss. We stopped to chat and take a photo, and were amply rewarded. In the time honored tradition of street barkers, the friendly cupcake lady bears gifts of coupons for free cupcake minis.

In a blink, my son snatched his prize and was off to redeem the coupon.

The cafe is located at the back of the indoor mall, or the front if you happen to be entering from the side that faces the public library.  Seating spills out into the mall, next door to a little shop promising Psychic Readings.

I can’t tell you much about what was inside.  There might have been booth seating and a fabulous new soda fountain, but I was mesmerized by the cupcake display. So many choices, many one of a kind cupcakes being offered for a short time only. On this visit, we found:

  • Cherry Cheesecake
  • Thin Mint
  • Worms In Dirt

This was in addition to the standard flavors: Red Velvet, Peanut Butter Cup, Vanilla,  and Chocolate.  It was much too difficult to choose between the cupcakes, so I purchased the Six Pack as well as an individually wrapped Puppie Cuppie for the furry member of our family.

As for my son, it was a difficult decision, but he went with the tried and true, chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting. Yum!

Oh my goodness, those sound amazing. I think we made a mistake not stopping in Saratoga yesterday on the way to The Great Escape. I think I know where we need to go one day soon. Thank you for sharing your adventure 🙂
