Family Fun in New York City’s East Village : The Big Gay Ice Cream Shop

One of my favorite neighborhoods in New York City is the East Village. The kids like it there too, because of the unique shops and the excellent people watching.

On a recent family trip, we headed down to Astor Place via the Lexington Line on the subway, where the big giant steel cube sculpture tempted my son to try to make it spin, a feat of strength that served as preparation for our ultimate mission – consumption of ice cream! It’s a quick walk over from Cooper Square to try out the treats at The Big Gay Ice Cream Shop, on 7th street between 1st Avenue and Avenue A.

The Big Gay Ice Cream Shop is an offshoot of The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, which operates seasonally and at various locations (check the website for info). Having a storefront too means tasty deliciousness is available year round, so we took advantage. The ice cream is a typical vanilla soft serve, but the genius of the Big Gay Ice Cream team is in the choice of toppings – from sea salt to sriracha to pumpkin butter, this is not your usual frosty freeze joint.

I tried the Salty Pimp, a vanilla cone with dulce de leche, sea salt and chocolate dip. My daughter has wanted to try the Mermaid, a sundae that is inspired by key lime pie and contains lime curd, vanilla ice cream, graham cracker crumbs and whipped cream. My son went for the American Glob, with the same vanilla ice cream, sea salt, pretzels and chocolate dip. They all were stellar, and next time I plan to be more adventurous and try out something counterintuitive like crushed wasabi pea dust, or ginger syrup. Or both together!Salty Pimp from Big Gay Ice Cream Shop NYC

I couldn’t get more pictures because the treats were devoured faster than I could access my camera. Bonus discovery: there’s a frequent buyer club, when you’ve purchased 10 items, you get a free cone. We’ll get there in no time!
