A Public Service Announcement On Underage Drinking

Albany Kid is all about fun things to do with kids in New York, but there are times when we have to stop and think about something that’s not so fun.  Honestly, I don’t want to think about underage drinking.  I know that I’m not alone in believing that my kids are good kids, and they would never take these risks.

Nevertheless, underage drinking is on the rise in Capital Region communities, and it’s nothing like it was in my generation.  Teens are slamming down drinks with the full intention of getting drunk, and they’re combining this with Ecstasy and/or prescription drugs.  This risky behavior is very prevalent, but it’s unusual for kids to admit it. I certainly didn’t know anything about this until recently when some of my Girl Scouts took on a drug awareness project. Many parents still have no idea as to the extent of the problem.

When I did hear about this issue, I still didn’t believe it was my problem since I can’t imagine my kids doing drugs.  Hopefully, by talking early and often, this will never happen with my children.  Even so, I was reminded that even if my kids do avoid risky behavior, some of their friends won’t.

I was also reluctant to get involved because I didn’t think anything could be done that would make a difference.  However, I’ve been assured that “there is a solution to the problem of underage drinking, and that the solution to this problem lies in the communities, schools, faith communities, businesses, youth, health providers, law enforcement, courts, families and every other sector of the communities.  Everyone is part of the solution!”

Alright, then, I’ll do what I can, starting with speaking up about the problem.

On Albany Kid, I’ll keep you posted about upcoming community events to address underage drinking. Please don’t hesitate to share community events or service projects that impact our children.
